Mobil gear oil lubricates wind turbine gearboxes

Exxonmobil Lubricants and Specialties (LandS) is now supplying the Thanet offshore wind farm with Mobilgear SHC XMP 320 gear oil.

Exxonmobil LandS works with Chemical Corporation, one of the Mobil-branded UK distributors, to offer lubrication service packages to the UK wind industry, in order to help wind operators increase productivity and reduce unscheduled downtime.
The partnership combines the performance of Exxonmobil's synthetic oils and greases, designed to cope with the challenging environment in which wind turbines operate, with Chemical Corporation's overall service offering, which includes oil changes, oil condition monitoring and used oil removal.

An element of this offering includes using a mobile oil exchange pump unit to remove used oils and refill turbines with Mobil Industrial's range of high-performance lubricants.

Mobil SHC lubricants are filtered to high cleanliness levels, certified and sealed to reduce risk of in-transit contamination, then transported to the wind turbine farms alongside the mobile pump unit.

This allows technicians to carry out a complete oil change in an average of just two and a half hours, compared to the typical eight hours, increasing turbine availability and productivity.

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), wind farm and service engineers have the option to hire the equipment to undertake these services or can outsource the entire process to one of Chemical Corporation's partner service companies.

'We are constantly looking at ways of improving our customers' wind turbine productivity, which includes carrying out faster, more effective oil changes, as well as extending oil drain interval periods,' said Steve Stewart, operations director, Chemical Corporation.

As part of the agreement with Chemical Corporation, Exxonmobil's Mobil SHC-branded synthetic gear oil, Mobilgear SHC XMP 320, will be offered to customers.

It is said to be an ideal lubricant for wind turbine gearboxes because it is claimed to exceed the performance of conventional, mineral-based oils while extending the interval between oil changes from 18 months to three years or more.

In addition to Mobilgear SHC XMP 320, Exxonmobil offers a wide range of lubricants that are formulated to deliver protection for all parts of a wind turbine, including greases, lubricate bearings and hydraulic oils that help pitch-type rotor blades.
